How to Ace the Job Interview
Part 2 - Executing the interview
The interview is your time to demonstrate you are the best person for the job.
- Arrive early! Allow at least 10 minutes to collect yourself, make a good impression on the receptionist, and observe the company's environment.
- Greet each interviewer by name, wait for them to offer their hand for a handshake and invite you to sit down before you do.
- Be aware of your body language: Do you appear tense? Or are you more open, with hands folded in your lap, confident posture and smiling at appropriate times? Be sure to make eye contact with the interviewers to appear self-assured and in control.
- Answer the question! Sometimes candidates go off on a tangent. If you do veer off the subject do your best to bring the focus back to the topic at hand because as McGee points out, "you don't want to talk yourself out of a job".
- Keep your nerves in check. Try monitoring your breathing and paying attention to the pace of your speech and clarity of your voice and your voice will sound calmer.
- Know your resume: Be ready to provide concrete examples relating to your accomplishments. "Your resume is a snapshot of the professional you," says McGee.
- Ask questions about the company in the interview. Interviewers allow time at the end for questions, so this is your time to demonstrate interest and show your knowledge of the company.
As the interview wraps up, thank each interviewer for their time, shake hands and leave with poise.
