How to Ace the Job Interview
Part 1 - Preparation
-
Ask how many people will be interviewing you and the approximate length of time of the interview. Get the names of the interviewers in advance so you can "put a face to the name" and address each one personally throughout.
- Research, research, research - Familiarizing yourself with all of the information on the company's website will show you have done your homework. During most interviews, you will be asked, "What do you know about our company?" so be prepared to answer confidently.
- Practice your responses to possible interview questions with a friend, in the mirror and with your employment counsellor.
- Take extra copies of your resume and your references for the interviewers and be sure to let your references know you have an upcoming interview. Send them a copy of the job posting if you can.
- Lay out your interview clothes the night before and make sure they are neatly pressed. Minor details may get overlooked when preparing for an interview but lapses are noticed by employers and seen as unprofessional. "Both women and men should avoid all scented products, have neatly manicured nails, and wear minimal jewellery," McGee stresses. Every little detail counts!
- Invest in a good quality portfolio or carrying case for your items, rather than using bulky purses or, worst of all, plastic bags.
- Map out your route well in advance and allow plenty of time to arrive at your interview.
Completing these key preparation elements will give you increased confidence as you gear up for interview day.
