Toronto This Week
Week of April 23 to 29, 2013

Welcome to the weekly newsletter from www.linkingboomers.com

LinkingBoomers.com is a free and easy-to-use site for people 50+ looking to stay better connected to their community through events, volunteering, classifieds and personal ads.

Hello!

April 21 to 27, 2013 is National Volunteer Week. To highlight this special week, Times Change Women’s Employment Service from Toronto has offered to share the story of a volunteer in their organization:

When Josie Huhn retired from her 32 year career as a Teacher she had a few goals in mind for her retirement: giving back to the community and using her skill set to do so. In her words, “I was not done!” As she scrolled through her weekly linkingboomers.com e-newsletter she stumbled on ‘Volunteers’ and a request from a women’s employment centre. Interesting, she thought. One quick email, and a phone call later, Josie was at Times Change Women’s Employment Service getting comfortable in her new role as Front Desk Reception on the busiest shift of the week. Josie says she thrives with volunteering and reaps many of its rewards: keeping her professional skills fresh and learning new ones in the process, interacting with the friendly staff and the sense of purpose volunteering brings to her life. However, if you ask her what she finds most gratifying about volunteering, she will say humbly, “I volunteer because I make a woman’s day brighter by treating them with respect and compassion, and a big smile.”

On behalf of LinkingBoomers.com, we wish to thank all volunteers from coast to coast for their time and dedication. Volunteers play an important role in supporting communities, services and so much more. We encourage you, our fellow members, to also take the opportunity this week to thank a volunteer.

Thank you and have a great week everyone!
